Bandwidth Management
Bandwidth Expansion
The economics of moving from 550 MHz or 750 to 870 or 1 GHz
look nearly identical. Operators who are operating at 550 MHZ
and looking for a bandwidth expansion option should heavily
consider moving all the way to 1 GHZ. The cost will be virtually
identical to "stopping" at 870 MHz and the 1 GHZ solution will
position them well for the future. With no reduction in the need
for bandwidth no matter what mix of services you forecast, the 1
GHz solution is the best route for anyone looking to move up
from 550 MHz.
Any of the bandwidth optimization techniques mentioned
earlier can be deployed at 1GHz making the available capacity
that much greater. The most important consideration concerning 1
GHz equipment is whether the manufacturer has fully tested the
equipment to 1 GHz with a mix of analog and digital loading. CPE
devices are already being positioned to support that bandwidth
growth.
The Scientific Atlanta Advantage: As on-demand,
high-definition and high-speed data, voice and commercial
services continue to grow in popularity, Scientific Atlanta
continues its technology leadership by offering the latest in
its 1 GHz product portfolio – the GainMaker® Scalable Four Portt
Node (GS7000). The 1 GHz platform gives broadband operators the
extra bandwidth needed to expand their interactive service
offerings to customers.
The GS7000 is Scientific Atlanta’s next-generation platform
product featuring a 1 GHz capable four-port node. This offering
will provide full four-way forward and reverse scaling
capability and a variety of analog and digital transmitter
options. The mechanical design is based around the best features
of Scientific Atlanta’s legacy optical node product lines and
utilizes existing GainMaker Amplifier accessories to create a
platform that is extremely technician friendly and will scale
with new service deployments.
Regardless of the mix of services broadband operators plan
for the future growth of their sites, the need for available
bandwidth to support advanced services becomes a critical issue
in order to remain competitive. The capability of Scientific
Atlanta’s 1 GHz platform, including the GainMaker Scalable Node,
GainMaker RF Amplifier, and Prisma II Analog Optics Platform,
provides a cost-effective solution for managing and expanding
the productivity of existing bandwidth, while supporting the
increase in demand for advanced interactive services and rapid
deployment of high-definition (HD) content and bundling services
to include the latest voice, video and data technologies.
Launching progressive services requires progressive
technology, and seeing no end in sight to the growing demand for
advanced services, the company has developed a viable solution
to these challenges. Economically, the jump to a 1 GHz platform
is comparable in cost to expanding to 870 MHz, but the 1 GHz
platform is significantly more flexible and scalable. This
enables operators to expand current content offerings and plan
for emerging, next-generation services to protect the future of
their investment and compete effectively with satellite
operators.
