Abstract
Recent shifts in the regulatory and competitive landscape
promise to bring innovations to the entertainment video
industry over the next several years. FCC rulings calling for
HDTV must-carry and encouraging the elimination of standard
definition TVs have prompted a major push in the consumer
electronics industry to make HDTVs more affordable and within
reach of the masses. Cableës push into wireline voice coupled
with the emergence of higher compression standards has brought
the FTTH network provider, as a third formidable competitor,
to the video market currently dominated by Cable and DBS.
Consumers empowered with bandwidth intensive technologies and
applications, and a wider choice of service providers, present
new opportunities for the contenders to pursue along with new
challenges.
